Speaker Bio

John Phelps is a telecommunications and secure-connectivity subject matter expert (SME) with nearly forty years’ experience in the plastic-card industry and over twenty-five years specialising in GSM, 3G, 4G and 5G SIM technologies. His career spans technical consulting, regional technical leadership across Africa and the Middle East, and nearly eight years managing the technical relationship with a large pan-African telecommunications group, and has been with IDEMIA for 17 years.


John brings deep expertise in smart cards, SIM and eSIM technologies, remote SIM provisioning, M2M and IoT connectivity, mobile devices, and the transition from physical to digital products. He also has hands-on software development and testing experience in C/C++, Java, Java Card and SIM Toolkit applets.


Known for combining strong technical and process knowledge with customer-focused communication, John helps operators and enterprises evaluate, implement, and scale secure connectivity solutions. His current focus as a Regional SME includes eSIM for IoT, SGP.32, integrated SIM solutions and preparing connected ecosystems for evolving security requirements.
