Session Description

It is estimated that 85% of people affected by drought live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). They are also less likely to have the capacity to prepare for the challenges that drought and land degradation bring. Drought can lead to issues such as soil degradation, desertification and crop failure, which is a problem of enormous proportions for a world where 95% of the food production depends on healthy land.

The MENA region, with 89% of its land classified as dryland, is among the most water-stressed regions globally. Compounding this challenge are the growing impacts of floods, earthquakes and extreme heat. Digital technology offers powerful tools to help communities adapt to these risks and build long-term resilience. From satellite imagery and drones that map and monitor ecosystems, early warning systems that provide life-saving alerts, to digital platforms that connect smallholder farmers with information and sustainable practices - technology is already shaping solutions.

This session will explore how digital innovation can address drought and water scarcity through innovation, policy, strategic partnerships, and international cooperation. Speakers will examine the challenges faced by vulnerable communities, highlight promising approaches, and discuss how to create an enabling environment for collaboration and scale.
